THE SUMPTUOUS MERCEDES-BENZ CL65 AMG

Of all the ingredients of the CL65 AMG, it is the bombastic power of its 5,980cc twin-turbo V12 that never fails to impress. With 612bhp from 4,800 to 5,100rpm, and a whopping 1,000Nm of torque between 2,000 and 4,000rpm, this powerhaus of a motor feels able to literally neutralize the 2,240kg kerb weight of the AMG flagship coupé with ease.
Push the throttle to the plush carpet from rest and the suave coupé squats down and rockets to 100km/h in a gravity defying 4.4 sec. The massive wave of torque means it continues to gather speed at supercar-crushing pace. Were it not for the 250km/h electronic speed limiter, AMG says that 320km/h would be easy. And they will remove the limiter for a price.
As the 7G-Tronic gearbox is not able to handle the torque of this engine, the older 5-speed AMG Speed shift gearbox still does the work of sending power to the rear wheels. This gearbox is now so well honed that shifts are nigh imperceptible. In any case, there is so much torque on tap that the two extra gears are not exactly missed.
A car of this weight requires extraordinary anchors to rein things in from more than 300km/h so AMG uses the biggest brakes in their inventory: 390mm and 365mm vented floating discs. Front and rear discs are clamped by massive callipers, with a twin-sliding calliper design used at the front.
